It took a little bit to get into, but once I was hooked I found it hard to stop reading! I was a little disappointed by the ending, though.

Finally joining everyone and their mother in reading this book! Although this is Kya's story, her characterization seemed simplistic and her relationships a bit shallow. At times, I was annoyed by some of the implausibilities of the story,…

A young girl abandoned to live alone in the north Carolina marshes grows up to be as clever as she is different. Her difference makes her a target when local quarter back hero is found dead. I really enjoyed the characters in this book and…

A sweet book. My biggest take-away was an improved awareness of marshland and swamp; the vitality of life in them, and people's passion and emotional investment. The story does get emotionally overwrought at time, verging on harlequin…

Reminded me of Snow Falling on Cedars, but not as good as it. Overall, an enjoyable read, but not super great.

Really loved the vivid setting, deep character connections and storyline that drew you in. I felt so connected to these characters and their story. I can't wait to see the movie too!

Beautiful and vivid imagery. It felt like the swamp (and all its inhabitants) was it’s own character. However the actual plot and human characters were very predictable. Still an enjoyable read

A nice casual read. I enjoyed this novel but it wasn't anything amazing. There was a bit of drama, romance, emotions, but it just fell short. It felt like a watered down Nicholas Sparks story.

Page turner. Great story line, awesome ending. I found it a bit cheesy during some of the love/relationship scenes, felt it didn't do character justice in some ways.

HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND. This book is an all in one type of deal. Can't wait for the movie to come out June 2022!!!

Although I found the overall storyline really good, and different than the typical genres. I found parts of it so hard to read with the accents, it made it hard to follow along at times. The ending was quite the twist!

This book is so beautifully written. It has mystery, a love story, survival, coming of age, and nature all combined. It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I cried at the end from all the emotions that I held back while…

Wow. Wow! I haven't stayed up to finish a book in years, and I'm so glad it was this one. It's almost 1AM and I am on a book high. The beginning was a bit a slow-going, it takes a minute, but once it grabbed you it does not let go.

This novel could be the basis for a very popular and visually beautiful movie.

Was there anyone who didn't love this book? Well, from the comments below, I suppose so but this is far superior than many other books in storytelling, suspense, surprise, romance, danger, nature...you name it. I loved most of the…

Idk maybe it's just me, but I didn't love this book. It was good but didn't have me staying up all night to finish it either. It was sad. And I felt the first half of it moved awfully slowly. The ending make it worth it but it was kinda…

I love how Owens uses her background as a zoologist to provide beautiful descriptions of creatures and nature in general. It is a very lyrical and moving story. Some of the events ended up shocking me due to the great presence of the…

I thought this was a great book. If it takes me less than 3 weeks to finish reading a book, then it was a good one. Very riveting, must read.

I found the way Kya was left by all of her family very unbelievable. She was just a little girl, wouldn’t one of her siblings rescue her when they ran away. Would a community really abandon a child all by herself? I did enjoy the…

The nature-based elements of the story were really fine in my opinion, but when it came to descriptions of main characters and their relationships, I found it a little too bodice-rippingly simplistic. She's drop-dead gorgeous, both blokes…

Seems like a regular, predictable novel, until the ending. The ending kicks you in the gut. It is memorable, for sure. I did like the descriptions of nature. It paints a picture like that of bayou near New Orleans. People who are keen…

Loved this book! Such lovely descriptions of North Carolina marshlands and coastal areas, and the birds and other animals that inhabit them. A different world for me , and I felt like I was there.

I had a hard time getting a hold of the time-line shift and figuring out the story initially, but that soon passed. An intriguing tale of a young girl who learns about life through nature, her only companion. Inspiring and fantastic, I…

It seems that I am not quite as taken with this book as many others are. This very fast read had me shaking my head from time to time as I tried to imagine Kya's day-to-day life. I also began channelling Gene Stratton-Porter's book 'Girl…
