In The Dells, some otherwise normal-looking creatures are born with vibrant-hued hair and a hunger for the meat of other "monsters" like them. Fire is a human monster, with flaming red hair that she must keep under wraps to avoid unwanted attention, human and otherwise. While out hunting with her bow she finds herself the target of a poacher on her friend Archer's lands, and this seemingly accidental act sets into motion a tale of both mystery and adventure involving kings, queens, assassins, friendship and secrets. It is difficult to sum up my feelings about this book, primarily because so much of it was long-winded and forgettable. While I devoured Graceling, I wasn't quite as enamored with Fire. Her story was simply not as compelling, and didn't do justice to the unique and intriguing world the author has created. I would have liked to hear less about how other monsters constantly thirsted for Fire's blood in exchange for additional character development. That said, I'm still looking forward to Bitterblue!
