Yeah, the 1st Air Cavalry battle depicted in this movie actually happened more-or-less as portrayed. Unfortunately it is a piece of the mythology of the Vietnam War that grows more every day. I encourages we veterans to lie through our teeth even to one another about what we were, why we were, what we actually did back in those times. I go to the VA Hospital and sit in waiting rooms with dozens of other vets who lie to one another everyone claiming to be a combat vet. Every finance clerk every tanker, every helicopter mechanic has become a point man or sniper. I know a guy who was a battalion logistics officer with the Air Cav who's claiming today he was an infantry platoon commander. That war did a lot to all of us in this country, military and non military, but first and most it made liars of us all. A war we never should have fought, where every death was a waste. We lost, and nothing bad happened as a consequence. So we lie to ourselves and one another. But only one out of every 20 of those guys wearing Vietnam Veteran caps ever even heard a shot fired in anger. One out of 100 were near enough to be in any danger. Force us to tell the truth for once.
