I've read a few of Deutermann's later books, mostly about WW2 naval and military action in the Pacific . I came to this one later and it is entirely different, and a very good read. Written before 09/11/2001 , it exposes the serious security threat that railroads face, and the vulnerability of the US railroad network to criminal and terrorist threat. It also highlights the serious lack of rail bridges across the US most important river, some even being over 100 years old. These combined threats are more serious than the threats faced by airlines, where all the security efforts are focused. Although excellently written, the ending is a little dragged out , convoluted, and scarcely believable , which is why I rated it below 5 stars.
