Summary

Maisie Winters thought of herself as an ordinary, normal, young adult. She thought that she had a pretty normal life: a girl looking forward to going to Prom with her boyfriend and best friend, a redheaded track star, a straight A student, and a hopeful Senior of entering her dream college. With all of this, she has to ignore the negativity that is brought from her parents always fighting about everything. She only hopes of peace between the two. This is all a part of what Maisie looks (and has to look) forward to each and everyday. Until one morning, while on a run, Maisie thinks. She thinks about what is currently going on in her life. Then, it starts to slowly rain, faster, and faster. By this time, she’s going home. Then lighting strikes! That was the last thing that she remembered. After this, Maisie went through a tough time. This is because she had to get some new parts for her face. She had to stay in a two-month coma, just so that she could have time to recover (well, at least a little). Through this time, her parents were by her side, wishing to get their daughter back. The feeling that Maisie had when she found out what happened to her face was horrified. She felt, faceless (which was the reason the author, Alyssa sheinmel, made this the title). She had to get surgery and long recoverment. Throughout her whole experience, everyone always called her lucky. She never thought she was. In fact, she hated being called lucky After some very long recovery, she tried to go back to school, but it wasn’t easy. At all. She got teased, and her confidence was draining faster than anything. Later when her mother had enough, she signed her up for a class filled with people who went through many different tragedies. Things slowly started to get better (after meeting a few people). Throughout the whole entire book, it wasn’t until the end, where Maise finally noticed that she was actually lucky. For reason that will have to be discovered by readers. The author wrote this book, not in her perspective, but in Maisie’s. She wanted the audience to feel and think everything that Maisie felt and thunk. Not just Maisie though, everyone who had/has went through what she did. Though this book, Faceless, included what Maisie was going through, it is very unlikely that someone who read it, who didn’t go through the same thing as her, knew exactly how she felt. This is a very hard time for such a young adult to go through. “She doesn’t even know what’s going on, let alone a thirteen- almost fourteen- year old to know how someone could feel as much pain as Maisie did.” is what most people would say. The thing is, that was the whole point as to why the author wrote this book. To help young readers (mature 13 and older) understand and feel everything. Faceless was written in an advanced way, but was very understanding. The author felt the need to write this to teach many readers that they don’t know what it feels like to have horrifying surprises get thrown at you unexpectedly. There is a feeling of having a lesson towards readers to make them think about what’s going on to others, and consider others on how they feel. This goal was achieved by having others think about one another. Faceless should be a very recommended book because the whole time getting read went by very smoothly and should be told to everyone. To help everyone get into the authors’ mind, recommend it to people. There is always a chance to change many people’s perspectives on life. No one on earth has a perfect, normal life, and only sometimes people have the chance of being lucky. Though everyone can help each other feel normally lucky.
