I liked many aspects of this story better than the sequel, Day Dreamers, by the same author. This story is about different animals on which "You'll be carried to your dream tonight On wing or paw or fin." Each different animal leads a child to a different dream world including an elfin hollow and beneath the seven seas. The illustrations are beautiful and have an old-time feel like something you would see in the 1940s or 1950s. They are colorful and imaginative. On one page you see a child drawn in blue who is sleeping and on the next page you see that child in the colorful dream world. The prose is much more comfortable and simple in this story than in the sequel. I very much enjoy books that encourage the imagination. I would have liked to see a little more length in this story as it is very short. It is advertised for ages 2-5, however, I think the illustrations and the fairy tale creatures would interest slightly older children and early readers as well. It is written as a bedtime story, but the illustrations are not to be missed--even in the daytime!
