Gorgeous debut novel that chronicles that time in our nation's history after the revolutionary war when many wanted to ban slavery. It is beautifully written and felt -- you know these characters at the end in an intimate way due to lovely first person shifts. Though thin on plot, the story stays with you when you are not reading and long long after you've finished the book. It is rare for a slave novel to cover the effect of slavery on the owners and children of owners. A GREAT book club choice. Better than Mudbound, a favorite of mine. Far better than The Help. Read it.
