There were a few issues I had with this book (none of the half a dozen characters who got sections from their point of view were female, which is disappointing especially in a book published so recently; you can't just take a stereotype of Japan, add black people and think you've created a whole new fantasy world), but on the whole I liked it. Buchanan takes some big risks with his storytelling, and it pays off in the end. I will probably be reading the next book in the series.

An entertaining read. I'm looking forward to Book Two.
