So many, many good things to say about this story--but every one is a spoiler. I can say that the reader knows early on that none of the suspects are guilty, and the frustrations that D.D. feels at having to follow the evidence when she knows it isn't going to help her drives the story. The twists and turns at the end of the novel make for some heart-pounding pages.
I suspect that Gardner believes that "the husband is always guilty" really means that "if all else fails, pit it on the husband"; the cops can always arrest the husband because jurors have seen enough movies and read enough books to be willing to find the husband guilty despite lack of evidence. I am so rarely surprised by a book, that this was an especially challenging "who done it."

I enjoyed this book, unlike some of the other reviews though I found the beginning a bit slow. But by the time I was midway through I couldn't put it down. Admittingly I found some of the chapters with the Police a little uninteresting and preferred the "missing" woman's story line. Having never read a Lisa Gardner book before I may try another one of her novels.

I'm disappointed....its a fast read but too many details that bog the storyline...the last 15 pages excellent but I need more substance..I read this book large print maybe that could have been a deterrent

Same old, same old junk. If I want to read details about this dysfunction & sickness the daily paper provides enough. IMO all her books are the same & not worth my time.

Good enough to read. Warning the second half of the book isn't as good as the first half

The second half was poor and predictable, But the 1st half was so good, that I think its worth the read.

"In Boston, Massachusetts, a pretty young teacher has disappeared from her home, leaving her young daughter asleep upstairs. While at first it seems possible, if unlikely, that she left of her own volition, things don't quite add up... and there's no shortage of suspects, starting with her strangely uncommunicative husband. The detective assigned to the case is D.D. Warren (in her 3rd appearance), and she digs up more strange connections the deeper she goes, including information that suggests that the missing woman - and her husband - carefully concealed her past. The Neighbor won the 2010 ITW Award for Best Novel; the series is now up to six if it catches your fancy."
