Having read a number of reviews that expressed disappointment in the ending of this exceptional book, I was braced for a terrible finish. I certainly didn't see it coming, but the ending did fit what I had come to believe and feel about Narigorm as she goes from being a novelty to creepy to downright scary. The ending does turn a historical novel into a psychological thriller, but one could reconsider the entire book based on the ending and see those overtones throughout.

At any rate, Company was a delicious book. Maitland effectively drops the reader into the coarseness, fears, superstitions and precarious nature of life and fortune in medieval England without the burden of Middle English that would have made the reading cumbersome and pulled the focus off her brilliant character development. Set against the backdrop of an England in the grip of the pestilence and exploring the value (necessity?) and danger of lies, Maitland's storytelling is vivid and satisfying.
