1986 adaptation of Umberto Eco's medieval murder mystery starring Sean Connery. I think this was something of a flop on its release, partly because French director Jean-Jacques Annaud spent a lot of money on recreating an abbey and partly because it was too strange and dark for the 1980s. The period is lovingly recreated in all its glory and squalor and this is the only film I know of that has consultants for manuscripts, liturgy, and heraldry. The intellectual games of Eco's novels are lost, but the plot is swifter and more involving. The murders are kinda like a dark ages "Seven." Connery, who was at a low point in his career, is well-cast and the fine supporting includes Christian Slater (more subtle than he would later be), Ron Pearlman, Michael Lonsdale (who was a Bond villain), and F. Murray Abraham in a memorable turn as the inquisitor Bernardo Gui.

A stellar performance from Sean Connery and (a very young) Christian Slater. Compelling plot, fantastic setting, great characters. Highly recommended.

Acting, directing, casting, photography, screenplay, production design: all superb.

Enjoyable murder mystery starring Sean Connery, based on the book by Umerto Eco.

One of the best Mysteries I've ever seen! Sean Connery portrays William of Baskerville, a monk trained in using reason along with faith. A very young Christian Slater plays his naive yet quick witted assistant. They both must solve a series murders while also being challenged by zealots who believe it's the work of the devil.

Sean Connery, the only James Bond, is terrific as usual. Interesting and probably fairly realistic portrayal of the Christian religion in the Middle Age and the fatuous banality of Catholicism which persists in the person of a useless piece of flesh called pope.

Thoroughly enjoyable mystery-thriller; aside from the full-on sex scene in the middle (which seems to have been pulled from 1970's porn archive).

Sean Connery played Sherlock Holmes in a 14-century monastery. The plot may be slightly flawed but the film was saved by the on-location shooting in an impressive, awe-inspiring environment. This film is at times simply a visual delight. Enjoyable.

I actually liked this film more than the book. The book is about philosophy and humor. The film is about the gritty darkness that always accompanies the higher quest of the spiritual life. 5 Stars.
