Mankell uniquely uses inclusion in this an other Kurt Wallender tales, in his crime solving team, and the reader as well. It is difficult for the reader as a psuedo member of the team listening to views, logic, and decision making, while being privy to information, profile of the antagonist, while being exposure to more facets of the storyline.
Sadly, unexplained is the antagon- ist's development and/or reason(s) for the brutal ritual used on the victims, and why this reasoning was extented to the killing of Kurt Wallander and his daughter. Also, the 14 year old antagonist (in 7 of the last remaining pages) axe is unstoppable against the police and their guns.
