In the future, after a Third World War has decimated much of the Earth's population, a new nation arose. Believing human emotions and their expression were to blame for the failings of past societies, it is decreed that all citizens must take a daily dose of a drug which levels out the emotional landscape, and that all forms of creative expression are against the law. An elite law enforcement officer who tracks down and punishes "sense offenders" one day, accidentally, fails to take his drug, and for the first time begins experiencing emotions himself.

I don't care what genre of movie, how good or bad it is, but if they use animals in a negative way I am greatly bothered by that. Yes, defenseless dogs were shot offscreen. That was unacceptable. You can think otherwise but I hate it. I am glad the protagonist spared that adorable puppy though.

As for the rest of the movie, my thoughts mimic the negative reviews here. I did, however, enjoy how the protagonist fights.

Watch the original François Truffaut "Fahrenheit 451" (1966) instead. This is an under budget, dreary remake. The original has better acting (no black moodiness), and is well lit - instead of - "We can't afford much, so let's light it in the dark" - even in the daytime. Fascism had more of an impact in the original movie because everything was portrayed as a normal lifestyle, as opposed to this movie that hits you over the head with it's portrayal as <queue melodrama theme> "Dum, dum, dum!" something's not right.
Just the clue of the blurb on the cover referring to "The Matrix" is enough of a hint to avoid this. I give SF movies a chance on the hope that my selection will show up on the Hollywood RADAR as something I want to see as a genre, not as an excuse for them to keep producing re-hashed schlock like this. It was another example of not having a budget - no pictures of slow motion dodging because, again, they didn't light the scene - just muzzle flashes in the dark.
So far for me Christian Bale is a hit and miss actor. This is one of his misses. View "American Hustle" for one of his hits.

Story - ridiculous
plot - not much
acting - not much
action - so over the top the 12 year olds will love it.

Don't bother.

My dad and I the other day were sick and were looking at netflix and chose this one. Mistake, the movie is a mash up of multiple other sci fi films like The Matrix and Inception except the directors do a poor job with Equilibrium. Interesting concept. Poor acting, script and cinematography. The ending was just awful. 1.5 stars for pretty legit fight scenes.

what do you get if you took the dystopian classics, collaged them all together with a ton of stylistic 'influence' from The Matrix and assembled this b-movie with a happy ending? a total waste of time! at least Ultraviolet had an interesting visual aesthetic...

A flat-footed remake of Fahrenheit 451 [and 1984].
All style, no substance. Lotsa black leather and attitude. After first 5 minutes i didn't care who won/lost.
Slick garbage

The disease is "human emotion"._____ Equilibrium's story is set in the futuristic, post-apocalyptic State of Libra._____ With "Father" as the supreme dictator and the Tetragrammaton Police as the hired-muscle: All members of Libra's automaton society are forced to take Prozium, a highly-effective emotion suppressor._____ Cleric, John Preston is a top-ranking government agent whose responsibility it is to destroy those who oppose "Father's" laws, which includes the refusal to take one's daily dosage of Prozium._____ The first half hour of Equilibrium was actually quite exhilarating with its stunning visual effects, knock-out gun fighting and its martial arts combat that was nothing short of stupendous._____ But, then Cleric, John Preston had to go and "secretly" stop taking his Prozium and that's when this film sank right down to the level of a totally sucky, cry-baby, futuristic melodrama._____ In the long run, Equilibrium's story was less-than-original, being pretty much just a lop-sided mishmash of such movies as - Gattaca, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138 and The Matrix.

This movie is pretty silly and boring. I fell asleep about two-thirds of the way in. The only thing about this movie that caused me to have a "sense offense" was the renewed realization that Christian Bale really does have a breathtakingly beautiful mug. His face is a masterpiece. Aside from the pulchritudinous perfection of Christian Bale, there was nothing memorable or remarkable about this movie.

If you think the story line is poor then you just haven't lived enough to relate to the story. If you ever have been injured and gone on opaite pain killers and come off then you will understand the drug they are feeding the population in this movie to dull there senses. You will also nderstand how life is much brighter when you are free of such drugs which happens to the main character happenings in this movie. It is the ultimate of sci- fi and not everyone can understand the beauty after having to be on opiates. In the movie they call there equilibrium drug the opiad of life, and the strugle is just getting free of it all 5 star movie all the way with the awesome action.

Violence: Probably a thousands dead bodies shown. Shootings and stabbings. The most violent scene is a man has his face cut off, we see it slide off his face.
