This is readable, but I'd recommend giving it a pass. It doesn't add anything to the original Jane Eyre story.

Plucked this off the library shelf because I liked the title. When I saw that it was about a spunky, determined 10 yr old girl making her way through life, I knew I would like it. Didn't realize it was a retelling of Jane Eyre until…

I really liked this book and Emma's character up until midway when Emma's romance with Sinclair unraveled because of some obscure thing that had happened 20 years earlier. After Sinclair, Emma's story loses focus and meanders through "and…

I love that this was set in Scotland and Iceland and I enjoyed Gemma's narrative voice. The writing is lovely and although the book is 464 pages, I read it quite quickly. I did have a slight problem with the relationship between Gemma and…

As with Jane Eyre this is a book that I didn't want to put down. Perhaps it was a bit sappy at the end it was still a well told tale.

The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey. 4/5 stars. * I love the concept behind this book! It's a reimagining of the story of Jane Eyre, set in Scotland in the 1950's and 60's. * Margot Livesey's writing is beautiful. Here's an…

An enjoyable read. I picked it up because I heard it was a modern retelling of Jane Eyre, but this is a novel that stands on it's own. It's easy to root for long suffering Gemma Hardy, she doesn't seem too perfect, or too patient to be…

A contemporary twist on Jane Eyre set in 1950s-60s Scotland. The early part of the novel is the most engaging as it closely mirrors Jane Eyre, with Gemma enduring the abusiveness of her aunt and cousins, and her transforming experiences…

A lovely, romantic read! Entertaining and fun.

Enjoyed this one. Good settings, characters and a fast pace. Noticed a recurring theme with young childrn being left by flaky young mothers, three times in one book is overdoing it.

I have read all of Margot Livesly's books and loved them all, was excited to see her new one come out and it did not disapoint, a wonderful story of an orphan who overcomes incredible obstacles.

I loved this thoroughly romantic fairy tale of a Cinderella-like orphan in 1950s Scotland who fights to survive, to discover the story of her parents, and to believe herself lovable. Based on the Jane Eyre story.

I have seen the author's name about for years, but have never before read one of her books. What a treat for me to have finally discovered her. A very good read, indeed. Very Jane Eyre-ish, but with some unexpected twists. The society of…

I really enjoyed this book. It brought me back to the type of book that first made me a keen reader...it's well written, thought provoking and makes you feel like you know Gemma yourself!

I found this book to be engaging from beginning to end. It goes beyond a modern retelling of Jane Eyre and allows more space for the heroine to discover her world on her own terms.

I am a fan of Margot Livesey but found this novel disappointing. I kept asking myself what was the point of it at all. Sure it is a modernized version of Jane Eyre but why do we need that? I found I got quickly bored with it and wished I…

Livesey's retelling of 'Jane Eyre' works especially well in the early part of this interesting novel, when Gemma is sent to earn her keep at a 1950s boarding school in Scotland. Gemma's plight is palpable, even as her conditions steadily…

Very easy reading and quite pleasant although Gemma watching over 2 kids in the same story tends to make it seem as if the author didn't know how to make the story longer. The first half was brilliant whereas the second half of the book…
